e-brod.com: LOST AT SEA Topic Shipbuilding
| TIME IS RUNNING OUT FOR SHIPYARDS
Years of brushing aside problems in the Croatian shipbuilding industry has finally
culminated in a frantic last minute search for a restructuring solution that is
compatible with EU competition policy
During early last week, reviewers
in the Ministry
of Economy, Labour and
Entrepreneurship reviewed abstracts
concerning the restructuring
plans for Croatian shipyards,
aimed at making the industry
compatible with European competition
policies.
State Secretary for Economy Leo
Begović, who will be responsible
for “smoothing the edges” when
things get difficult around the
negotiating table, announced on
television that the scenarios for
overcoming the most difficult
chapter are still not satisfactory
and must be modified. Talks with
leading shipyard directors were
resumed later in the week.

e-brod.com: 50 New Ships Ordered Topic Shipbuilding
| One sentence from the
Vice Prime Minister
and Minister of Economy,
Labour and Entrepreneurship,
Damir Polančec, in a TV
appearance recently, brought
the subject of shipbuilding
into the public eye. Polančec
said one shipyard will be shut
down and one will be converted.
To prevent further a further
avalanche of speculation from
the media, Tomislav Mazal,
Spokesperson of the Ministry
of Economy, denied reports
of the possible bankruptcy of
Brodotrogir, and stated that
the Ministry is revising improved
restructuring plans introduced
by the management
of the five state-owned shipyards
and that it is too early
to talk of shutdown or bankruptcy
of any shipyards.

e-brod.com: Reinhard Lueken, secretary general of CESA: Shipyards in Croatia will only survive if they all work together Topic Shipbuilding
| The restructuring of Croatian
shipyards has been postponed at a
very inconvenient time. Shipyards
around the world are overload
with new orders, whilst the merging
of shipyards leads to the opening
of new ones. China is leading
the way, followed by several Asian
countries, such as Vietnam, who
have recently embarked upon developing
a shipbuilding industry,
whilst Europe has taken over the
high technology market and inovation.
Our Brussels interlocutors
share the view that the Croatian
shipbuilding industry has to take
the advantage of the opportunities
offered. They also agree that it is
a pity that there are still no real
solutions to the problem of shipbuilding
on the eastern Adriatic
coast. And it does have a future,
says Secretary General of the
Community of European Shipyards’
Association convincingly.

e-brod.com: Each of ´Big 3´ Shipbuilders Likely to Win $20 Bil. Orders Topic Shipbuilding
| The world’s top three shipbuilders _ Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) _ are each expected to receive $20 billion worth of ship orders this year in what market observers say is a milestone in the industry.
This rosy prospect comes from several factors _ rising oil prices, soaring demand for larger container ships and offshore oil exploration.
Hyundai Heavy, which has reaped $15.7 billion worth of contracts so far this year, is reportedly negotiating with European companies to build more high-value added larger container ships.

| BRUSSELS (AFX) - The European Commission has approved investment aid of 500,000 eur for the Slovakian shipbuilding company Slovenske lodenice Komarno which operates shipyards on the Danube river in the south of Slovakia.
The aid will form part of a 2 mln eur investment project to optimise the shipbuilding yard's layout and make its production processes less dependent on the water level of the Danube.
The commission said that, under EC Treaty state aid rules, the investment is compatible with the single market and will not distort competition.
